I was very blessed to be raised in a household of art and medicine. Respecting the sanctity of life and appreciating beauty were instilled in me at an early age. Guided by two parents who were survivors of the depression, medicine was the first profession and art the second. Thus, going simultaneously to school and art classes became natural. Even while in medical school, I attended the Art Student’s League. The bonuses of a dual education have enriched my life immeasurably. The skills developed in art school have helped me to reconstruct mutilated patients and perhaps hone sensitivities to those in need. Dealing with human mortality daily as director of a burn center, has made me appreciate the beauty of the world around me and respect its fragility. Immersing myself in nature is both therapeutic and humbling. The quest to capture the light, to express myself in an original way is always challenging. Whether drawing or painting in oil or pastel, the goal is always the same – to create rather than to destroy.
